Video Game Sales Round-Up (Week Ending Jan. 31)
It’s no surprise that Nintendo dominates the American sales this week, according to http://vgchartz.com, as there were next to no big new titles to dent the momentum that Nintendo is experiencing. Namco Bandai’s Afro Samurai was the only new release that cracked the top ten in sales. The 360 version almost sold 60k units good enough for 4th place while the PS3 version sold over 30k netting it the 7th spot. The only other charting new release was Take 2′s MLB Front Office Manager which didn’t even crack the top 100 and sold less than 10k units.
As for the top selling titles of the week, Nintendo’s system (and the publisher) took the top 3 spots for Wii Play, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart Wii. Wii Fit sold over 200k units while the other two sold over 100k units. Activision’s Call of Duty: World at War for the Xbox 360 is sticking in there with the 5th spot at just under 60k units sold. Skate 2 for the Xbox 360 had a good second week nabbing the 6th spot with almost 45k units sold. Surprisingly, a Playstation 2 game almost cracked the Top 20 as Madden NFL 09 sold over 20k units for the week. Why Sony didn’t decide to market the Playstation 2 as a companion system and give it full software support similar to what Nintendo did with the original NES after the release of the Super Nintendo is beyond me. Considering that it has the largest install base of any system ever in history and now that they are not selling any Playstation 3 systems that are backwards compatible, keeping the PS2 open as a viable platform would have help Sony keep it’s gaming division profitable until the PS3 division became profitable on it’s own. But that’s a rant for another day.
