Weekly Movie Post – June 17, 2009
Well, Steve called it and I completely missed it (which thankfully the only proof of that is on the podcast we recorded, that due to technical difficulties, won’t be available). According to the number tracking website http://the-numbers.com/, The Hangover took the number one spot again at the theatres this past weekend by beating out Up!. The Hangover took in over $32 million compared to Up!’s $30 million. The highest grossing new release this week was The Taking of Pelham 123 at only $23 million (at least I called that one right).
The newsmaker is still The Hangover which is still wildly popular and very successful. It almost took the record for smallest second week decline ever; narrowly losing out by 0.08% (currently held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl at 27.01%). The Hangover has a good shot at hitting number 1 this coming weekend too as many people are getting really excited to find out what all the buzz is all about and with all the extra revenue the movie is making, more money is being put into promotion for the film.
Eddie Murphy’s string of miserable failures continued with Imagine That; which only opened with a mere $5 million. It was a weak weekend for opening films which allowed for existing films to get a little bit of a boost (or slow the decline if you’d rather look at it that way). Star Trek still managed to pull in over $2000 per theatre despite releasing over a month ago. 17 Again almost doubled it’s numbers from last week taking in over $1000 per theatre even though that film has been out for almost two months now. Although, I’m suspecting that the main reason for the boost is that 17 Again is playing at many cheap-ticket theatres that run movies about to release on DVD so the boost probably comes from there.
