The Top 10 Games of 2011

It’s the New Year so it’s time again to look at last year. 2011 was a good year for games. It wasn’t a particularly outstanding year but it did provide enough solid gaming to keep us entertained. What’s interesting about this list is that there is only one new IP throughout; the rest are all sequels (or prequels). Maybe the big reason why this hasn’t been a stellar year is because innovation is stifled by game companies sheltering themselves with familiar names to stay on the safe side. Even then, some franchises like Elder Scrolls offered up experiences that weren’t just about HD graphics but gave us games so large in scope that they seemed unimaginable five years ago. While the industry still waits for the next big thing, there were still plenty of great games (and a few instant classics) worth playing. If you haven’t played the following games in 2011, there’s nothing like starting the New Year right with these ten titles.

  • Jamie Gore and John Teodoro
  • Podcast delivered despite being pretty awfully sick all week
  • I don’t hate Nintendo but for this podcast, I really hate Nintendo
  • Seriously Nintendo, make with the games on the Virtual Console…and bring back IPs like Pikmin, WarioWare, Advance Wars, and Kid Icarus (no, that Sin and Punishment knockoff doesn’t count)
  • Speaking of downloadable games and hate, I really tear Sony a new one; do they not want me to use my PSP anymore?
  • Microsoft got off easy…lucky them

Better late than never some might say but these podcasts are disgustingly late. Hopefully these will be the last items to ever be massively delayed on this site again. There will be a bunch of new content popping up on the site this weekend as the site once again returns to normal. Starting today, all the normal features are back and there will be daily updates (mostly) on a regular basis everyday.

I finally got my new audio equipment in so the podcast quality starting with the Day 2 Recap should be much better (at least when it’s me on the mic.). I re-recorded the Day 2 Recap so I could try out the new equipment. I still have some tinkering to do but it still sounds great. In fact, the quality is so good that I was able to finalize the recording at 64kbps instead of 128 to save on space and there doesn’t seem to be any degradation of quality. If you notice any problems or have some suggestions on how I can improve the audio, please leave me a comment below or send me an e-mail at jgore@madnessbrewing.com

Thanks again to Chris Karpyszyn and Steve Wood for helping out with the Day 1 recap. If you’re interested in Chris’s ramblings, head over to his site at www.chriskarypszyn.com.

BREAKING NEWS PODCAST: Wii 2 Announcement – Reaction and Speculation

BREAKING NEWS PODCAST – Wii 2 Announcement – Reaction and Speculation
<20 mins (18.2 MB)>    ^ Right click to save ^

Nintendo has finally made it official and announced the successor to the Wii; something that the industry analysts have been predicting since 2008. Chris Karpyszyn and I discuss what this means for Nintendo and whether or not they can stop losing market share to the other companies. We also talk about the Playstation Network outage that doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon.

Chris and I will be back again on Thursday to discuss this further as more news leaks as well as other items in the world of gaming including Portal 2 and the first month of the Nintendo 3DS. The Weekly Movie Podcast will also be released sometime tomorrow.

These breaking news podcasts are going to be a new feature of the site when major news goes down in the subject areas that are covered in this site (for example, Montreal and Canadian news, film, and gaming). If you have any questions or comments about the podcast, send them to jgore@madnessbrewing.com. I know there was an issue with my audio side as it sounds more like AM quality than FM quality but I think it’s because I deleted my master by mistake and had to take the audio from the Skype conversation between me and Chris instead.

It’s finally up. Despite my computer’s best attempts to delete all the audio files and my house’s attempt to drive me insane by losing power in the middle of post-production, I’ve finally managed to put together this week’s Video Game Podcast. Chris and I talk for nearly 90 minutes about video game sales, the future of the industry, OnLive, and other assorted nonsense. While downloading the podcast, continue reading below for the sales charts for the last four weeks (all data comes from VGChartz.com) as well as a list of the games that came out last week and this week (including trailers where available).

Weekly Video Game Newsletter–Vol. 3

Newsletter Pic

Well, it took much longer than I anticipated but here’s the latest edition of the Weekly Video Game Newsletter. I should be back to having it as a weekly feature. I already have several things written for next week’s issue so it shouldn’t be a problem unless something comes up like it has the last couple of weeks.

Inside you’ll find a full review of the E3 conference that took place a few weeks ago. I also voice list the games to keep an eye out for. There are also several reviews and Hall of Fame write ups, a look at Rockstar games throughout the last couple of years, and an analysis of the first week of sales for the two biggest games of the year so far: Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Red Dead Redemption. It’s a whopping 20 pages so there’s plenty of material to feast on.

The Weekly Video Game Podcast will be up on Tuesday. I spent way too much time fighting with the columns to work in Microsoft Word for the newsletter. The podcast is looking to be around 90 minutes long and is very light on E3 nonsense. It’s definitely going to be good stuff.

The Weekly Movie Podcast will be up Tuesday night supported by three movie reviews (of movies that are still in theatres!!!).
