Quick Oscar Recap

I am usually very critical of award shows for a number of reasons. For the most part, they don’t seem to get anything right (the wrong winners, hosts, and presentation are all part of the problem). Yet the Oscars usually finds its way in the end. The foundation may have been incredibly shaky but it showed why it remains the top award cerrmony in the American film industry.

84th Academy Awards (Oscars) Nominations

The 84th Oscar nominees were announced this morning. While there weren’t that many surprises (Hugo and The Artist have almost a billion nominations each), there were some shockers in the bunch (The Adventures of Tintin was not nominated for Best Animated Feature).

I’ll be offering some commentary on the nominations during the Weekly Movie Podcast tonight as well as looking at the Golden Globe winners from last week and the BAFTA nominations which also were announced a couple of days ago. There will also be an in-depth look into the Academy Awards nominations and the Golden Globes winners this Friday in the Weekly Movie Newsletter (along with reviews of many of the films nominated for both sets of awards).

Click more to see the nominees for the 84th Academy Awards.

Madness Brewing–Oscar Live Blog

11:43 – The final stats are four apiece for Inception and The King’s Speech. The big loser was True Grit as it picked up a grand total of zero Oscars despite having ten nominations. The film with the best winning percentage was Alice in Wonderland with 67% (two wins with three nominations). Inception performed better than The King’s Speech; even though the two films had four victories each, Inception did so with only eight nominations compared to twelve for The King’s Speech

There will be more Oscar discussion on Tuesday’s Weekly Movie Podcast and I’ll look at the entire awards season in Friday’s Weekly Movie Newsletter.

11:37 – Not my choice for Best Picture (I would have picked Inception or Barney’s Version had it been nominated) but it still was a solid pick. It’s a great film and chances are most people will enjoy this film if they take the time to watch it.

11:36 – WINNER FOR BEST PICTURE: The King’s Speech

11:34 – Way to show the ending to several of the Best Picture nominees in that montage, you goofs.

Madness Brewing Weekly Movie Newsletter #001

Right click to download newsletter

The very first issue of the Madness Brewing Weekly Movie Newsletter is up. It’s a double issue (16 pages) full of Oscar news and reviews. There’s a play-by-play of the ceremonies plus commentary. There’s also an article about the controversy surround a producer for The Hurt Locker, and his illegal campaign to solicit votes. Another article in the newsletter looks at the rivalry between Avatar and The Hurt Locker and how it ended up being the only battle people cared about going into the show. Also, reviews of all ten of the best picture nominees are included plus a review of last year’s winner, Slumdog Millionaire.

The newsletter is free of charge and is going to be published weekly. The next issue will be up on Saturday and, after that, will be a regular fixture on the site every Friday. It is in PDF format so you can take with you on an e-book or a Kindle, read it on your computer screen, or print it off and read anywhere you want.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, I also did a podcast about the event.

Peter Anthony Holder’s Stuph File Podcast #0028

It’s late-Monday/early-Tuesday so it’s time for another Stuph File Podcast. The Oscars are coming up and Peter Anthony Holder has an Oscar nominee as a guest on his show this week. It’s a really good interview with Juanita Wilson who’s the writer and director of the Oscar nominated short film The Door (in the category of Best Live Action Short Film). I really like the interview and she said some things that maybe some in the Canadian film industry should take note of.
