84th Academy Awards (Oscars) Nominations

The 84th Oscar nominees were announced this morning. While there weren’t that many surprises (Hugo and The Artist have almost a billion nominations each), there were some shockers in the bunch (The Adventures of Tintin was not nominated for Best Animated Feature).

I’ll be offering some commentary on the nominations during the Weekly Movie Podcast tonight as well as looking at the Golden Globe winners from last week and the BAFTA nominations which also were announced a couple of days ago. There will also be an in-depth look into the Academy Awards nominations and the Golden Globes winners this Friday in the Weekly Movie Newsletter (along with reviews of many of the films nominated for both sets of awards).

69th Annual Golden Globes Live Blog

10:58 – YAY! It’s over! The Weekly Movie Newsletter will be up on Monday night and there will be a Movie Podcast up on Tuesday recapping the entire show.

10:57 – Music to tell people to get the hell off the stage count: Ten

10:55 – Keep in mind that I really liked The Descendants, I think this was junk. There were two films that were better.

WINNER: The Descendants Best Picture – Drama

10:49 – I see we’re rewarding mediocrity. I like George Clooney but I don’t think this was even close to his best work. However, considering how this night has been, I just have to shrug my shoulders.

WINNER: George Clooney (The Descendants) Best Actor – Drama

  • Just me flying solo today
  • Still having audio issues so I apologize in advance for the popping sounds and the humming sound. I’m working on getting new equipment since I’ve narrowed down the problem to that.
  • Can anything stop Avatar?
  • There are way too many reasons why Canadians don’t care about the Genies and why a few Americans actually pay attention to the BAFTA awards. Maybe the Canadian film industry should take notes.

67th Annual 2010 Golden Globes Recap and Podcast

Madness Brewing Golden Globes 2010 Recap Podcast – 23 mins (10.7 MB)

Last night was the Golden Globes and it was something. I’m not sure exactly what that something was but whatever it was lasted three hours and was kind of bizarre to watch. Nobody ran away with the awards since 20 productions took home awards in 25 categories. There were few multiple winners. Listen to the podcast above to get a rundown of all the categories and some opinions of some of the awards and the event in general. Continue reading this post to see all the winners and some interesting statistics about the awards including which productions were the real losers of the evening and how much each award cost compared to a film’s budget.

Golden Globes 2010 Nominations and Podcast

Madness Brewing Golden Globes 2010 Podcast – 34 mins (15.5 MB)

*You may notice some sound issues at certain parts of the podcast where the levelling seems off. Skype was acting weird when we recorded this.*

I completely forgot that the Golden Globe nominations today so when I saw the news of the nominees, I pestered Chris Karpyszyn enough so that he’d agree to do a podcast where we’d discuss the nominations. Let’s just say, we’re not fans. It’s not that we have anything against the good movies that were nominated (they hit the mark on the movies that should have been nominated and only missed a few acting performances that were noteworthy). We have a problem with some really of the poorer selections (like House receiving a best TV series nod from one of its worst seasons; and this is coming from a huge House fan). We tear apart the nomination process and have a couple of laughs along the way. Before anyone comments, I know I realized after recording that I said Sharlto Copley’s name wrong. I still say that the greater insult is that he didn’t even get nominated. At least they didn’t forget about (500) Days of Summer. That was an amazing movie.

Click below to see a list of all the nominees plus a link to trailers for the films and a few of the reviews that I’ve done for a couple of the nominated films.
