84th Academy Awards (Oscars) Nominations

The 84th Oscar nominees were announced this morning. While there weren’t that many surprises (Hugo and The Artist have almost a billion nominations each), there were some shockers in the bunch (The Adventures of Tintin was not nominated for Best Animated Feature).

I’ll be offering some commentary on the nominations during the Weekly Movie Podcast tonight as well as looking at the Golden Globe winners from last week and the BAFTA nominations which also were announced a couple of days ago. There will also be an in-depth look into the Academy Awards nominations and the Golden Globes winners this Friday in the Weekly Movie Newsletter (along with reviews of many of the films nominated for both sets of awards).

69th Annual Golden Globes Live Blog

10:58 – YAY! It’s over! The Weekly Movie Newsletter will be up on Monday night and there will be a Movie Podcast up on Tuesday recapping the entire show.

10:57 – Music to tell people to get the hell off the stage count: Ten

10:55 – Keep in mind that I really liked The Descendants, I think this was junk. There were two films that were better.

WINNER: The Descendants Best Picture – Drama

10:49 – I see we’re rewarding mediocrity. I like George Clooney but I don’t think this was even close to his best work. However, considering how this night has been, I just have to shrug my shoulders.

WINNER: George Clooney (The Descendants) Best Actor – Drama

The box office saw a nice bump from the previous week despite there being no new movies (in wide release) released in theatres this past weekend. Plenty of discussion on this week’s podcast about the state of the movie industry, some movie recommendations and reviews, and a recap of what’s your options are in theatres and on DVD this coming week.

Salt (Movie Review)

Movie Review
Salt
2010
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber
Directed by: Phillip Noyce

Sometimes action movies can get away with having little substance and tons of style. If lots of things blow up and there’s violence to be had, depending on how it’s delivered, that’s all that might be necessary for an action movie. That would be fine for Salt but Phillip Noyce tried to make this movie into a serious film. It’s doesn’t work that well as a movie you have to think is somewhat believable. If you could sit back and think this was mindless fun then it would be one thing, but it tries to be a Tom Clancy novel; it just doesn’t work.

The Social Network (Movie Review)

Movie Review
The Social Network
2010
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake
Directed by: David Fincher

The story of the making of a website doesn’t appear to be exciting on paper but The Social Network is a very intriguing film. Granted, it does take liberties to jazz up the story behind the world’s biggest social networking website. Considering that it’s only one side of the story, any way it’s told needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The Social Network is an interesting look at how Facebook was created out of a sea of jealousy, rage, and extreme cut-throatedness.  While it is very well written (an Aaron Sorkin trait), it does fall into the same problems that most Aaron Sorkin-written pieces tend to fall into. Regardless, The Social Network is an interesting film that is well worth a look.

The Descendants (Movie Review)

Movie Review
The Descendants
2011
Starring: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges
Directed by: Alexander Payne

George Clooney has the distinguishable quality of being able to make even bad film watchable. There are few actors who can pull this off (Julia Roberts comes to mind). The Descendants (directed by Alexander Payne) has a good story but some weak pacing and some awkward moments that prevent it from becoming a classic. However, Clooney and the rest of the cast take what would have otherwise been a better-than-mediocre movie and make it something that becomes necessary watching.

Black Swan (Movie Review)

Movie Review
Black Swan
2010
Starring: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel
Directed by: Darren Aronofsky

Black Swan is a tale of two movies. There’s the movie that Darren Aronofsky wanted to make and envisioned and there’s the movie I saw. Black Swan is not a horrible movie but it misses the mark several ways. It’s obvious that Aronofsky was aiming for something but the film never seems to end up where the filmmaker wanted it to go. It’s not a train wreck but it’s not a train I would want to board again anytime soon.

Barney’s Version (Movie Review)

Movie Review
Barney’s Version
2010
Starring: Paul Giamatti, Rosamund Pike, Dustin Hoffman
Directed by: Richard J. Lewis

There’s nothing particularly amazing about Richard J. Lewis’s Barney’s Version. It’s a story about a guy who falls in love with a woman and their life together. On paper, it doesn’t exactly look like a film of the year candidate. However, this film is a finely crafted piece of cinema and is beautiful in its simplicity. It may seem like an easy film to overlook but this a movie that no one should miss.
