Quick Oscar Recap
I am usually very critical of award shows for a number of reasons. For the most part, they don’t seem to get anything right (the wrong winners, hosts, and presentation are all part of the problem). Yet the Oscars usually finds its way in the end. The foundation may have been incredibly shaky but it showed why it remains the top award cerrmony in the American film industry.
84th Academy Awards (Oscars) Nominations
The 84th Oscar nominees were announced this morning. While there weren’t that many surprises (Hugo and The Artist have almost a billion nominations each), there were some shockers in the bunch (The Adventures of Tintin was not nominated for Best Animated Feature).
I’ll be offering some commentary on the nominations during the Weekly Movie Podcast tonight as well as looking at the Golden Globe winners from last week and the BAFTA nominations which also were announced a couple of days ago. There will also be an in-depth look into the Academy Awards nominations and the Golden Globes winners this Friday in the Weekly Movie Newsletter (along with reviews of many of the films nominated for both sets of awards).

The Oscars were last night and there were very few surprises. Steve Wood joins me and we go over all the categories from last night’s show and what we though of the show in general. We discuss the few upsets that happened and the reasons behind The Hurt Locker’s dominance. It’s a pretty good show and best of all, it’s free! As well, continue reading this post to see all the winners and some interesting statistics about the awards including which productions were the real losers of the evening and how much each award cost compared to a film’s budget.

- Seriously, they picked District 9 and The Blind Side over (500) Days of Summer? I hope The Simpsons destroys the Oscars in the ratings.

Peter Anthony Holder’s Stuph File Podcast #0028
It’s late-Monday/early-Tuesday so it’s time for another Stuph File Podcast. The Oscars are coming up and Peter Anthony Holder has an Oscar nominee as a guest on his show this week. It’s a really good interview with Juanita Wilson who’s the writer and director of the Oscar nominated short film The Door (in the category of Best Live Action Short Film). I really like the interview and she said some things that maybe some in the Canadian film industry should take note of.

2010 BAFTA Award Winners and Commentary
In one of the major shows before this year’s Oscars, one of the major battles between the two biggest films of the year ended up being a blowout. Not only did Katheryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker take the Best Film category from James Cameron’s Avatar at tonight’s BAFTA ceremonies but dominated the show with six wins. Avatar had to settle for only two wins. Bigelow also defeated Cameron for the Best Director award as well.
2010 BAFTAs and the Canadian Awards Show Nobody Cares About
It’s no secret that the Canadian film industry is in bad shape. Ask your average Canadian what they think of Canadian film and chances are they’ll vomit a little bit in their mouth. Canada has had this problem for years despite the fact that the National Film Board is one of the most respected institutions in the world and Hollywood is full of actors, directors, and writers that were born and raised north of the 49th parallel. It’s not that all Canadian film is bad (although a decent portion of it is) but it isn’t marketed properly. There’s a bunch of things the Canadian film industry should do to fix their problems. One place they should look is across the Atlantic to Britain and see how they’ve handled celebrating their film industry.

- Just me flying solo today
- Still having audio issues so I apologize in advance for the popping sounds and the humming sound. I’m working on getting new equipment since I’ve narrowed down the problem to that.
- Can anything stop Avatar?
- There are way too many reasons why Canadians don’t care about the Genies and why a few Americans actually pay attention to the BAFTA awards. Maybe the Canadian film industry should take notes.
