The cuts at CJAD (and elsewhere) are sad and it probably won’t get better. However, with limited incentive for large corporations to make changes to how they operate, the only change will continue to be negative.

Matthew Vaughn set forth to make a slick looking movie about the drug underworld and pulled it off successfully with Layer Cake. It’s not perfect but it is still an excellent movie. Despite it trying to be very hip, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and tells the story in a very entertaining way. This movie should be watched by anyone who is a fan of British films, crime dramas, or good films in general.

As a piece of cinematic history, it’s good, but Allen has done better; both before and after this movie. If you’re an Allen fan and you’ve yet to see this movie, you probably will enjoy it. Despite my star rating, I don’t feel comfortable recommending it.

A comedy is supposed to be funny. Despite a decent effort by director Arthur Miller, The Lonely Guy’s poor story and dialogue make for a poor movie. The story of a born loser could be clever and amusing, but this movie often goes the cheap route, like making too many unfunny jokes about suicide. Mix that with unlikable characters and you’ve got the recipe for a dud of a movie.

Sometimes a movie has performances so good that you need to watch it for the acting alone. Lee Daniels’s Precious is an example of this. If the storytelling and cinematic techniques employed had been as strong as the performances, it would have been one of the best films on its decade.

Edward Zwick’s Blood Diamond is a film that breaks from the mold because it deals with African conflict in a way that could emotionally impact the Western Hemisphere. It is a great story dealing with the diamond trade and how it has wrecked much of the African continent.

It’s goofy yet interesting; the acting is sometimes questionable but doesn’t get away of the movie; and while the scary parts aren’t that unique, the allure of something shocking coming of nowhere gives The Power a surprising amount of suspense.
