Better late than never…maybe. Finally, here are the three podcasts that I did with Chris Karpyszyn and Steve Wood where we discussed the keynote presentations of each of the console manufacturers (Chris was absent for the Nintendo podcast). I apologize for not getting them out sooner but multiple issues popped up that prevented me from getting them out in a timely fashion. I actually enjoyed listening to shows again and all three of the podcasts may go to show how much of a dud E3 was this year since even though these podcasts are coming out over a month after the event, there’s been very little happening in the games industry to have made these podcasts seem irrelevant. The holiday season March 2013 should be an interesting time to be playing video games.

Another year, another top ten list for video games. Unlike last year where it was a bit difficult to come up with a top ten list, this year there were only a few titles that I feel one could argue could have made this list that aren’t on my list. Actually, I was not too surprised that Screwattack had nine out of the ten games I picked on their top ten list. Additionally, Gametrailers only had a top five but all five were games from my top ten list. Even though my list is being published last (I usually publish it on New Year’s Day), the list has essentially been in the bag for almost two weeks now. Had I published it earlier, I could have accused other sites of ripping me off. However, I think it’s because there were very few MUST OWN!!! games this year that it’s no surprise that there is quite a bit of consensus across the Internet. The last couple of years there has been major differences between the lists of most outlets. Now, it almost seems unanimous.
There will be a special Weekly Video Game Podcast posted tomorrow featuring myself and Chris Karpyszyn where we’ll look at the list and discuss it. There will be a supplemental podcast on Monday where we quickly talk about this list and compare it to the previous years. The second podcast almost didn’t exist as we were wrapping up the first one and then we started talking about the last year and the year before that. Before I knew it, we had talked for half-an-hour. Once the podcasts are posted, they’ll be linked to on the front page as well as this article.

Things have been very crazy for me the last couple of weeks. It seems like I haven’t been able to put much time into the site since E3 (although admittedly, I was so burned out with dealing with so much stupidity around the event that I was burned out on the whole Internet thing). In the last two weeks, I’ve written quite a bit of stuff on my way to and from work but haven’t had time to sit down and edit it. Likewise, Chris and I have gotten together to record several podcasts but I just haven’t had the time to work on the post-production stuff. So, not wanting our work to go to waste, I decided to post a “weekly” video game podcast so that people know that the site isn’t dead and that we have been working on some stuff. It’s basically two podcasts spliced into one as I removed some of the less interesting stuff and other stuff that we had talked about twice during both recordings.
There will be a podcast on Monday (we’re recording it in a couple of hours and I plan on editing it so that it’s available Monday evening). I also have a massive amount of reviews (both video game and film) that are coming up in the next couple of days. When I mean tons, I mean close to a dozen reviews up on the site by Wednesday. I’ll also begin the daily rants tomorrow (I’m putting the finishing touches up on one right now). For those that enjoy coming to my site but have been annoyed by the lack of posts, I apologize. However, I’m not going to post stuff because I feel I have to post stuff. I want to make sure that the work I’m putting into this site is a labour of love rather than just hard labour. I’m working on some projects for the site that will hopefully mean bigger and better things around this corner of cyberspace.
Two last quick notes: the video game newsletter will now be published on Wednesdays now (which makes things much easier for me if post-production of the podcast or editing of the newsletter goes awry) and Madness Brewing Live has moved to 8:30 eastern on Wednesdays but remains on the air at WRGT Radio

Video Game Review Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 Microsoft Xbox 360 (Xbox Live) 2008 Developer: Bizarre Creations Publisher: Activision
It’s hard to imagine what Bizarre Creations and Activision could do to the Geometry Wars formula to make a sequel worth buying but Retro Evolved 2 is probably as interesting an evolution to the formula as we’re going to get short of the fantastic Geometry Wars: Galaxies. The game that basically defined the twin-stick shooter genre is at its downloadable best here although it does suffer from a few shortcomings.

Platforming games were not as prevalent in 1982 as they are today. Video games back then were supposed to be quick experiences that you’d have fun with for a short period of time. This was very important for the arcades which relied on players to pump the machines full of quarters for as long as possible. Adventure games that gave the player a chance to play for an extended period of time were not good for the arcades because people would be spending less money. Home consoles started a different trend. While most people were happy to get home translations of their arcade favourites, many people wanted more from their high-priced machines. While it wasn’t first platform-based game, Activision’s Pitfall! made the genre accessible to the home market. It was fun to play and looked good, even though it was on the Atari 2600 which was a graphically inferior system compared to other home consoles and computers at the time.
