Then theatre operators declined to show the movie out of security concerns with Sony pulling the plug before its Christmas release so that nobody felt compelled to show it. Then there was backlash over the self-imposed censorship by Sony caused by the threats of cyber-attacks and violence. Now it’s about how the movie made millions through releasing it through video-on-demand (VOD). Some are saying this movie is going to cause a major shift in the distribution of movies. Yet those who blindly look at the millions and ignore what would compel people to stop going to the theatres don’t know much about movie distribution, VOD services, and the infrastructure that feeds both.

This podcast is a bit long and heavy as I not only discuss the box office numbers from last weekend and the new movies coming out but also the careers of Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall, and Joe Viskocil.

This is the first Weekly Movie Podcast in a very long time. It is also the last Weekly Movie Podcast before the last Weekly Movie Podcast before the Golden Globes. I tried to make those two sentences as confusing as possible.

There was a bit of an issue during the recording of the podcast. If you notice a place in the podcast that seems to sound like a rough edit, you’ll have found the place where my sound card decided that it was going for a coffee break.

Plenty of discussion on this week’s podcast about the state of the movie industry, some movie recommendations and reviews, and a recap of what’s your options are in theatres and on DVD this coming week.

No, this is not a dream. This is a podcast on this site that has actually gone up on time. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. There has been several podcasts (and a newsletter) to be published on the site over the last week and it should get busier on the site once we get into the new year. This podcast was slightly longer than I expected because I went into quite a bit of detail over the numbers from last weekend and try to explain why they were so poor considering that the holiday weekend traditionally is very busy for the theatres.
