Pong like games have been the basis for some notable titles through the years. Breakout and Arkanoid are examples of games that have taken a simple idea, added a few gameplay mechanics and have ended up becoming great games. Hi Tech Expressions’s Orb 3D not only takes the key concepts of Pong and make it its own but radically changes what we’ve come to expect from the paddle-based games. It’s different and fun but not without its flaws. Still, Orb 3D ends up giving the player an enjoyable experience that is unique from other things on the NES.

While most of the games produced by Sony under the PSP minis system have been extremely disappointing, Smashbreak is a nice treat. Although, it too is plagued with problems and ultimately will leave you shaking you’re head, it’s not bad enough to leave you violently frustrated. In 2009 going into 2010, many younger gamers only know Space Invaders through the excellent portable remake call Space Invaders Extreme or through stories they’ve heard from those who remember when video games only consisted of a single frame. If Pong got people interested in video games, Space Invaders got them hooked. Taito and Midway had no idea what they were releasing upon the world in 1978. They released something almost as addictive as cigarettes and many people saw their pocket change disappear in the blink of an eye.

If there’s one video game that most people recognize that came out prior to the home console rebirth in 1985, it was Pong. It wasn’t the first video game nor was it eye-catching. However, it was easy to get and fun to play with another person. Pong got people playing video games and laid the foundation for the entire genre of entertainment.
