Space Invaders clones are a dime-a-dozen in the gaming sphere although they’re less prevalent in today’s age than during the golden age of the arcades. To simply dismiss Xona Games’s Decimation X as a clone of one of the originators of the shoot-em-up genre is selling the game short. That being said, it’s not much different from Space Invaders. The graphics are not much better and the action is very similar (think of the original game but as if it were on steroids). Decimation X is a pretty good game at a great price that will easily suck away much of your spare time.

The latest edition of the Weekly Video Game Newsletter is finally up.

In this Issue:

  • Video Game Sales Recap for December 17th, 2011
  • Year in Review: Q1 Recap
  • Review of Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony for 2011
  • Adventure Island (NES) Review
  • Centipede (Arcade) Review
  • Decimation X (Xbox Live Indie Game) Review
  • Donkey Kong Country (SNES) Review
  • Space Invaders (Arcade) Review

From now on, game reviews will appear in the newsletters first and then eventually be published on the website. Reviews will start appearing on the site again starting on New Year’s Day.

The next issue will be published on Saturday, December 31st, 2011. In that issue, this site’s games of the year list will be published. That list will appear on the site on Sunday, January 1st, 2012 (as per tradition).

PLEASE NOTE: There was an error with the review score for Donkey Kong Country. As much as I love the game, I cannot give the game the full five-star treatment for some of the issues associated with the game (the biggest one being that trying to complete the game 102% is next to impossible unless you get help from an outside source or have hours to kill to test every pit and make blind leap-of-faith jumps). The score should have been four stars. I’m sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused. Don’t worry though, there is a five-star video game review coming up soon. Because of linking issues, I will not be making a change in the newsletter during the short term but when I eventually make a page on the site just for the newsletters, I’ll change the review score in the newsletter when I archive the newsletter there.

Interview with Matthew Doucette of Xona Games

Xona Games

A few weeks ago I did an interview with Matthew Doucette of Xona Games. It was a really good interview and I’ve received quite a bit of positive feedback from the interview. It had previously been only available in the middle of one of the weekly video game podcasts but I’ve decided to make it avaliable as its own separate download in its entirety. We talk about one of the best games currently on the Xbox Live Indie service, Decimation X; as well as the upcoming Duality ZF. Matthew also shares his opinions on what its like being an indie developer and how interesting a road its been for him and his brother Jason (the two of them comprise the entire staff of Xona Games).

It’s really worth the listen and if you have an Xbox 360, I highly suggest you pick up Decimation X. It only costs around $1. Personally, I can’t wait to get Duality ZF in my hands.

Here’s the latest Weekly Video Game Podcast. The lists of sales and trailers for the new games will be up later. I’ve got to head out and go from my house which is in the middle of the island of Montreal and go from towards one end of the island and then backtrack toward the other end of the island. It’s going to be a long day but I’ll do what I can when I get back.

Also on the podcast is an interview with Matthew Doucette of Xona Games. If you’re into indie games or downloadable games in general, you need to listen to this podcast. Matthew also talks about their current game, Decimation X as well as their upcoming award-winning game, Duality ZF.

Check out the site for Xona Games as well as the site for Duality ZF. Also don’t forget to check out the Xbox Marketplace area for Decimation X.

Interview with Matthew Doucette of Xona Games

Yesterday I did an interview with Matthew Doucette of Xona Games. Hopefully it will be the first of many interviews that I’ll do with indie developers for this site. The full interview will be up tonight with the weekly video game podcast. I really suggest you check it out when I post it because it’s a really interesting look at indie gaming development as Matthew offers a really candid look into getting games published for not just the Xbox 360 but also on any platform.

Click here for a sample of the near-40 minute interview that we did last night.

The podcast should be up closer towards the end of the evening.

Check out Xona Games as well as their new game Duality ZF.

And if you have an Xbox 360, you need to do yourself a favour and buy Decimation X.
