It’s very frustrating to sit through an awards show and basically be told that the show is probably rigged. It became a running gag during the 73rd Golden Globes that not everything was on the up-and-up which made what began as an entertaining evening (Ricky Gervais was very funny) into a tedious chore of watching station ads, trailers for the nominated movies, and award winners that seem more cherry picked than earned. So I apologize if the post-Golden Globes podcast sounds a bit on the angry side but it after a week of watching on average two movies a week to get caught up on all the nominees, it felt kind of pointless in the end.

I apologize if there were some audio issues with the podcast. I was trying a slightly different setup and I have a bit of a sore throat. I know the sound quality isn’t awful but I’m a bit of a stickler for audio so the fact that the sound fidelity may only be 9 out of 10 still bothers me.

Here’s a link to the Metacritic list I mentioned on the podcast.

Inception (Movie Review)

Movie Review
Inception
2010
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page
Directed by: Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan’s Inception is a movie about paradoxes. The film itself is a paradox because for as much thought that was put into the narrative of the story, the film relies heavily on the audience to fill in major gaps of logic. Despite this, Inception is a great movie for fans of any genre. Calling it an action movie would be unfair to the film’s deeply thought out storylines and calling it a cerebral drama would be unjustly ignoring the film’s wonderfully shot and choreographed action scenes. Either way you look at it, it’s a mind-blowing film.

Blood Diamond (Movie Review)

Movie Review
Blood Diamond
2006
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, Jennifer Connelly
Directed by: Edward Zwick

There have been countless films about Africa and the troubles facing the continent, These films have addressed difficult situations in the name of telling a good story but didn’t create an awareness with the viewer that these problems are happening to real people every day. Edward Zwick’s Blood Diamond is a film that breaks from the mold because it deals with African conflict in a way that could emotionally impact the Western Hemisphere. It is a great story dealing with the diamond trade and how it has wrecked much of the African continent. However, using something that the West can relate to—in this case diamonds—Zwick has managed to leave an impact with the viewer about the problems Africa is facing long after the credits roll.

Body of Lies (Movie Review)

Movie Review
Body of Lies
2008
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe
Directed by: Ridley Scott

Espionage films generally walk a fine line. They usually have convoluted and complicated plots with a large cast of characters. Generally, they run the risk of alienating a good portion of the audience who have trouble following along in exchange for an overly-engaging story with tons of plot twists. Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies does a great job at offering up a good spy movie that, for the most part, will be understood by most of the audience. It does suffer from many of the problems that plague spy movies but generally it is still a very enjoyable film.
