Super Mario Galaxy 2

The Top 10 Video Games of 2010

Another year, another top ten list for video games. Unlike last year where it was a bit difficult to come up with a top ten list, this year there were only a few titles that I feel one could argue could have made this list that aren’t on my list. Actually, I was not too surprised that Screwattack had nine out of the ten games I picked on their top ten list. Additionally, Gametrailers only had a top five but all five were games from my top ten list. Even though my list is being published last (I usually publish it on New Year’s Day), the list has essentially been in the bag for almost two weeks now. Had I published it earlier, I could have accused other sites of ripping me off. However, I think it’s because there were very few MUST OWN!!! games this year that it’s no surprise that there is quite a bit of consensus across the Internet. The last couple of years there has been major differences between the lists of most outlets. Now, it almost seems unanimous.

There will be a special Weekly Video Game Podcast posted tomorrow featuring myself and Chris Karpyszyn where we’ll look at the list and discuss it. There will be a supplemental podcast on Monday where we quickly talk about this list and compare it to the previous years. The second podcast almost didn’t exist as we were wrapping up the first one and then we started talking about the last year and the year before that. Before I knew it, we had talked for half-an-hour. Once the podcasts are posted, they’ll be linked to on the front page as well as this article.

Whether you agree with this list or hate it, say something about it. Leave a comment at the bottom or send me an e-mail at madnessbrewing@gmail.com and I’ll read your comments during the next Weekly Video Game Podcast,

Weekly Video Game Podcast – The Missing One <110 mins (91.5 MB)>

Things have been very crazy for me the last couple of weeks. It seems like I haven’t been able to put much time into the site since E3 (although admittedly, I was so burned out with dealing with so much stupidity around the event that I was burned out on the whole Internet thing). In the last two weeks, I’ve written quite a bit of stuff on my way to and from work but haven’t had time to sit down and edit it. Likewise, Chris and I have gotten together to record several podcasts but I just haven’t had the time to work on the post-production stuff. So, not wanting our work to go to waste, I decided to post a “weekly” video game podcast so that people know that the site isn’t dead and that we have been working on some stuff. It’s basically two podcasts spliced into one as I removed some of the less interesting stuff and other stuff that we had talked about twice during both recordings.

There will be a podcast on Monday (we’re recording it in a couple of hours and I plan on editing it so that it’s available Monday evening). I also have a massive amount of reviews (both video game and film) that are coming up in the next couple of days. When I mean tons, I mean close to a dozen reviews up on the site by Wednesday. I’ll also begin the daily rants tomorrow (I’m putting the finishing touches up on one right now). For those that enjoy coming to my site but have been annoyed by the lack of posts, I apologize. However, I’m not going to post stuff because I feel I have to post stuff. I want to make sure that the work I’m putting into this site is a labour of love rather than just hard labour. I’m working on some projects for the site that will hopefully mean bigger and better things around this corner of cyberspace.

Two last quick notes: the video game newsletter will now be published on Wednesdays now (which makes things much easier for me if post-production of the podcast or editing of the newsletter goes awry) and Madness Brewing Live has moved to 8:30 eastern on Wednesdays but remains on the air at WRGT Radio

Moments after the show ended tonight I received a bunch of compliments and people wanted the MP3 file of the show. Show here’s the unedited version of the show for everyone to enjoy. Chris and I had a lot of fun doing the show where we just rambled on about how great and crappy Super Mario Galaxy 2 is, how we think Natal will be a bust, how great the Move can be, and the potentially awesome games that might come from Nintendo for the 3DS (but will most likely never show up because they never support their handhelds with a major launch title so we’ll most likely see a port of Super Mario Sunshine).

I get distracted by a menu for Marco’s Restaurant in St. Laurent and we reminisce over another Marco’s Restaurant that had existed in Ste. Anne’s (the two restaurants have nothing to do with one another other than having the same name). We also get a bit distracted by the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. However, for the most part, we’re on top of our game for the entire two hours.

Just be warned though…this show is uncensored. Chris does have a bit of a potty mouth. Listener discretion is advised.

Towards the end of the show, I talk about the revised schedule. There will be both a video game podcast and a movie podcast up tomorrow (Thursday). I’m going to try to finish the video game newsletter for tomorrow but I’m not 100% confident I can do that. There will be a movie newsletter up on Friday. So two newsletters and two podcasts up in the next 48 hours. Plus tons of reviews and other assorted nonsense.

One last thing, the site will be receiving a design overhaul. It will be something similar to how the site used to look before I moved over to WordPress. It may feel a bit awkward at first since the sidebar will be moving from the right side of the screen to the left but I think most people will enjoy the new look of the sit. If not, I promise to give you a full refund to whatever you’re paying me to look at my site.

This podcast was recorded last Sunday but due to some technical and logistical issues, I haven’t been able to post the podcast until today. I talk briefly at the beginning about the posting schedule for the website but I’ve modified it and the current schedule can be found in a posting update I published on the site on Monday evening. The reason why I published this podcast instead of junking it due to it being delayed for so long is that I really enjoyed listening to it. I listened to the thing in its entirety three times during post-production (which tells you about all the problems I had with my audio-editing software). It’s probably one of the best podcasts that I’ve ever published on the site.

There are big plans for E3. Check out Madness Brewing Live on Wednesday at 10PM for more details (on WRGTradio.com).

Madness Brewing Weekly Video Game Newsletter #001

Right Click to Download Newsletter

Well, it almost drove me insane between the editing issues and the podcast but the first Weekly Video Game Newsletter is out. I apologize in advance if there are any formatting issues as Word was giving me a major headache. The feature article for this week’s issue goes over all the big titles that are supposed to be released in the second quarter of 2010 (April through to June). There are also several reviews and Hall of Fame write-ups that were already featured on this site so you can take them with you to read on the go if you have a Kindle or some other e-book. There’s also a really interesting look at just how bad Sega’s sales have become. People complain about the Sonic games but it looks like all their games are garbage.

The newsletter is free of charge. The next issue will be published on Wednesday and will be a weekly fixture on the site. It is in PDF format so you can take with you on an e-book or a Kindle, read it on your computer screen, or print it off and read anywhere you want.

If you have any questions or comments, send them to madnessbrewing@gmail.com
